Background & Experience

Bijan Khazai combines years of GIS experience and a diverse training in Geology, Engineering Geology, and Civil Engineering. He is currently finishing work on a doctoral dissertation in applying GIS to earthquake-induced landsliding. As a principal of SIG and researcher for the University of Califronia - Berkeley he has been involved several consulting and research projects in implementing GIS to solve geological and environmental problems. These include, developing a GIS framework to model seismically induced slope deformation and perform risk assessment for PG&E's transmission line system; performing a GIS-based travel model evaluation study for AC Transit; developing geomorphic terrain models to determine the impacts of landuse on aquatic resources for Balance Hydrologics; and producing a series of planning documents and map layers for Environment Now, Inc. and Safe Solutions Group. He has also worked as a programmer/analyst for the UC Berkeley GIS Center, where he initiated the creation of a metadata clearinghouse node and was involved in the GIS analysis for a campus-wide Long Range Development Plan.

Bijan Khazai has been active in GIS education in both industry and academia. He is a lecturer at California State University Hayward, where he teaches a graduate GIS course to Earth Science students. He has also taught several short courses in GIS as an instructor at the UC Berkeley GIS Center and has helped in designing SIG's Arc View tutorial course. Additionally, he has repeatedly served as a teaching assistant at UC Berkeley and designed introductory and advanced laboratories in Engineering Geology where he introduces GIS and digital mapping. He also has extensive international experience, including various invited lecturing and speaking engagements at Kyushu University, Institute of Environmental Systems, Japan; National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), Taiwan; Tubitak, Marmara Research Center, Turkey; and member of the NSF sponsored geotechnical reconnaissance mission to Taiwan after the 1999 Chi Chi earthquake.

Bijan Khazai has expert knowledge of GIS technologies and theory and is proficient in the use of ESRI based GIS Technologies (ArcGIS 8.x, ArcView 3.x, ArcIMS, ArcObjects, MapObjects), database technologies (MS SQL Server, MS Access), and web technologies. He is also proficient in programming with Perl, Fortran as well as Visual Basic, Avenue and AML. He also has extensive knowledge of statistical and remote sensing analysis and software packages.

In addition to peer-reviewed book chapters, conference proceedings and project reports Bijan Khazai has published in Engineering Geology, Geographic Information Sciences, and Earthquake Spectra. Bijan has bachelor's degrees in Geology and Geophysics and Geological Engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla, a Masters degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and plans to receive his PhD form the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at U.C. Berkeley.
